Periodontics

Periodontal diseases are infections in the structures around the teeth like the gums, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. The goal of periodontal therapy is to restore diseased tissue to health. Poor oral hygiene leads to the formation of plaque, housing bacteria, which if not removed by proper brushing and flossing, leads to hardening and form calculus that causes inflammation.

The stages of gum diseases are-

  • Gingivitis- Plaque formation causes mild symptoms like tenderness, swelling and bleeding of gums while brushing.
  • Periodontitis or pyrrhoea- This is the more advanced stage. In this, gums start to recede and pockets of inflamed tissue develop between teeth and gums. The common symptoms are bad breath, sensitivity and pain
  • Advanced Periodontitis- In this stage, gums recede even more, expose roots to decay and cause teeth to loosen.

The periodontal treatment comprises of these approaches, depending upon the severity –

Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and Root Planing
These deep cleaning techniques are the best starting point to control gum diseases. Plaque and calculus are removed from beneath the gum tissues, over tooth surface, by ultrasonic cleaners. Root surfaces are smoothened, discouraging the further buildup of tartar and bacteria.
Flap Surgery

In this process, a section of gum tissue is lifted back exposing the roots, for most effective scaling and root planing. Underlying bone is re-contoured and gum tissue is sutured back in place.

Soft tissue grafting
Soft tissue grafting
If excessive gum tissue has been lost, a gum grafting may be performed. This can reduce further gum recession and bone loss. These grafts can be used to cover roots or develop gum tissues where the excessive gingival recession has occurred.
Bone Grafting
Bone Grafting
This procedure is performed when periodontitis has destroyed the bone surrounding the tooth root. The bone graft helps prevent tooth loss by holding your tooth in place and also serves as a platform for the re-growth of natural bone.
Laser treatment
